About this TownhouseThis is a beautiful medieval blank canvas four bedroom town house which also includes a separate studio flat, situated just off the main piazza in Caltabellotta, just north of Sciacca. The outside of the house has recently had extensive renovation work conducted replacement and repairs to the roof, the outside brick work repaired and restored and windows hand made and installed, thereby ensuring the house is fully weather proof. The studio flat is equipped with a basic bathroom and kitchen. There is also a separate cellar room which has not been renovated. This can be connected to the main house whereas the studio flat cannot. Caltabellotta is situated, as a friend once told us, like an eagles nest in the mountains. Being 949 metres above sea level, means it has extensive views across the Sicilian landscape. Indeed the house itself, has two balconies both of which allow for you to be to sit out comfortably and soak in the views of olive groves, hilly terrain and then out to the Mediterranean sea.
Upon entering the house, through a solid wooden door, you ascend some white marble stairs which lead up to the first entry room. From here, stems the first balcony which features two historic stone seating on either side of the balcony. Back to the entry room and then through some old double doors into what would be the living room / area. Here there are windows on either side. One set of windows, enjoying the same views at the balcony and the other looking out onto the narrowed cobbled street below. This room features a lovely cornice for the ceiling lamp. This would make a nice size kitchen / living area possibly with a breakfast bar. To continue through the house you exit this room again through some double doors, this room is beautifully symmetrical with double doors on each side and windows on the other walls and come into a large hall way.
To the left is an area which could be made into the bathroom. It has a small window. To the right of the double doors is the trap door which leads down into the cellar. Further to the right is what could be the first bedroom. This is a very sweet room with a beautiful view all the way down the cobbled street of Via Balate. Back out to the hall way again, and there are some wooden steps leading up to the top two rooms. As you arrive on the third floor remember there is no first floor you come to the first room with a window at one either end. To the left of this room is the master bedroom. Stepping through into the master room is where most of the work has been done on the inside of the house. This is a huge airy room, in which you can see the timber beams of the roof. There is a large window showing the tremendous views. There is also a small window on the other side of the room so its nice and light. From this room you can reach the second balcony, a little smaller than the first but can still comfortably for a couple of chairs for you to enjoy a glass of nero davola the local wine and watch the sun go down.
When we have visited, often we would stay in the studio flat which has all the basic needs for your stay. We have friends and contacts within the village English speaking who can help guide you with sourcing quotes and materials. We used an architect to help project manage as we couldnt be there for the whole time in which the work was carried out. |
